Water
Demand is up, supplies are down. What can you do?
Where does San Diego County’s water come from? Ninety-five percent of it comes from miles away – down the California and Colorado River aqueducts. Yet those sources are under increased strain. Snowpack in the Sierra’s is consistently down. And demand on the Colorado River is increasing from other places. By 2050, San Diego could have an 18% shortage in water. The time to act is now. We must STAND FOR LESS. And conserve the water that makes our treasured lifestyle possible.
STAND FOR LESS. In your home.
Your dishwasher: Run it only when it’s full. You’ll save 2-4.5 gallons per load.
Brushing your teeth: Turn the water off. You’ll smile big when you save 2 gallons per minute.
Showers: By shortening them, you can save 2.5 gallons per minute.
Don’t use your toilet as a wastebasket: That can save1.6 gallons per flush.
Washing clothes: Wash full loads only and save 15-50 gallons per load.
Leaky toilet: Fix it and save 30-50 gallons per day per toilet.
Leaky faucets: They use an extra 15-20 gallons per day. Fix them!
Aerators with flow restrictors: Installed in kitchen and bathrooms, they can save 4.7 gallons a day.
Older, inefficient clothes washers: Replace them and you could save 20-30 gallons per load.
Older, high volume toilets: Replacing them can save up to 3.8 gallons with every flush.
STAND FOR LESS. In your yard.
Adjust your sprinklers: By preventing overspray and runoff, you can save save15-20 gallons per day per valve.
Reduce evaporation: Water only before 6 a.m. and after 8 p.m. You can save 20-25 gallons per day per valve.
Reduce watering days: Cut irrigation to 2 or 3 days per week or use the landscape calculator and watering index. Also, water only after the top inch of soil is dry.
Leaks and broken sprinklers: Repair them and save as much as 20 gallons per day per leak.
The miracle of mulch: Add 2” to 3” of mulch around trees and plants to reduce evaporation. It can save 40 gallons per day per valve.
Water efficient drip systems: Used efficiently, they can save up to 25 gallons every day per valve.
Smart Irrigation Controller: By shutting down the system when it rains and automatically adjusting for hotter periods, it can save over 500 gallons on a 30-station controller.
Native plants: Replacing a portion of your lawn with California friendly plants can save over 30 gallons per day per valve.
