California Department of Conservation
The mission of the California Department of Conservation is to foster a safe, sustainable environment for all Californians. By balancing today’s needs with tomorrow’s obligations, the Department fosters the wise use and conservation of energy, land and natural resources. This is accomplished through a variety of programs that are vital to the state’s public safety, environmental integrity and economic future. The DOC promotes beverage container recycling; regulates oil, natural gas and geothermal wells; studies and maps earthquakes and other geologic phenomena; maps and classifies areas containing mineral deposits; ensures reclamation of land used for mining; and administers agricultural and open-space land conservation programs.
